I join Sergey in memorializing the passing of Martin Gardner with whom I had a brief exchange of letters about VN's novel Look at the Harlequins and Gardner's The Ambidextrous Universe: Left, Right and the Fall of Parity. Gardner's work also figures in Pale Fire and in Ada. See my essay "The Ambidextrous Universe of Look at the Harlequins, pp. 170-184) in Worlds in Regression.

Martin Gardner, who quoted from John Shade in his<SPAN class=Apple-converted-space> The Ambidextrous Universe<SPAN class=Apple-converted-space> (1964) and was in turn referred to as an invented philosopher, "Martin Gardiner," in<SPAN class=Apple-converted-space> Ada, died on May 22, 2010.

Nabokov, among others, is mentioned here:<SPAN class=Apple-converted-space> <A href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/24/us/24gardner.html" target=_blank>http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/24/us/24gardner.html.
