Antonina Pavlovna (Lyubov's literary mother) wants to make a
play of Barbashin's unexpected release from prison and return to the city.
Antonina Pavlovna's name and patronymic hint at Chekhov. In a letter of
beginning of May, 1889, to Suvorin Chekhov writes:
My "Wood Demon" is coming off.
Leshiy ("The Wood Demon," 1889) is a play by Chekhov.
In 1890 Chekhov reworked it into Dyadya Vanya ("Uncle Vanya").
The verb vytantsovyvat'sya (to succeed, to
come off) used by Chekhov comes from tantsevat' (to
dance).
According to Antonina Pavlovna, had she been
writing this play, she would have chosen a
less stereotyped vestnik (messenger) than Ryovshin. In The Waltz Invention the Colonel compares Salvator Waltz,
the inventor recommended by general Berg, to
a vestnik who without respite runs many miles in order
to relate pustyak, son, goryachechnuyu mechtu (a trifle, trance, delirious dream):
(Act
One)
The Minister of War remarks that to a surname like
that one can dance.
As she speaks to her mother, Lyubov' quotes the Town Major's
words in Gogol's Inspector. In the same letter to Suvorin Chekhov
mentions Gogol and his Inspector:
But how direct, how powerful is Gogol, and what an artist he
is! His "Carriage" alone is worth two hundred thousand roubles. It is simply
delicious, and that is all about it. He is the greatest of Russian writers. In
"The Inspector General" the first act is the best, in "The Marriage" the third
act is the worst. I am going to read it aloud to my people.
Lyubov' mentions the fairy tale ("The Resurrecting Swan") that
her mother composed on the eve and wanted to read aloud after breakfast. In The Waltz Invention general Berg over the
'phone tells the Mnister of War about Perrault's death last night.
According to Berg, poor old Perrault (whose name hints at the French author
of fairy tales) died in his sleep. Actually, it is Lyubov' who dies in her
sleep and dreams of Barbashin disguised as Waltz.
Btw., Suvorin's first wife was assassinated by her lover (who
committed suicide). Tolstoy learned the details of the murder from Kramskoy,
the artist who made a portrait (two portraits, to be precise) of the
writer. Lyubov's husband Troshcheykin (whose name and patronymic hint at
Chekhov's and Tostoy's friend Gorky) is a portrait painter.
