I say a few things about the link between John Ray, Jr., and the English John (W)Ray in a paper on Lolita called "Editorial In(ter)ference," available in Miranda (online). The latter's work does seem to correspond in some ways with Nabokov's novel. For example, in "An Account of Some Errors and Defects in our English Language," (W)Ray argues, among other things, that the letters C and Q are superfluous. He writes, "Q ... is, by general consent, granted and agreed to be nothing else but cu." Of course, these letters and the phonetic play call to mind the portrait of Clare Quilty in Lolita (Darkbloom's My Cue, etc.).
