No great significance here - but the reference to the
'centenarian's fruit' once consumed voraciously by the
whitebuttocked Jimmy Major, is to the Washington Navel orange.
Descendants of a couple of Bahia orange trees imported from Brazil
and cultivated by Eliza Tibbets in Los Angeles in 1870 or 1873
(standard sources vary). One of these trees was still living and
fruiting in 2008. It was a centenarian, or near enough, when TT
was published.
