Some of the essays on Pale Fire in the latest Nabokov Online Journal—particularly the one on genealogy—approach this kind of “Immersion Criticism,” and might
therefore be easily dismissed. But I think Klosterman says some helpful things about how we might enjoy this kind of thing and how such criticism may be seen as a compliment to the author/filmmaker, rather than an abuse.
