is Kinbote, there are many hints that he did first go to Europe, and
then move to the USA, like Nabokov himself).
If he writes about himself "an American scholar of Russian descent"
(instead of just telling that he is an emigrant), it
is psychologically understandable desire to "embellish" his past, event
if he pretends that he is not Botkin.
