Photographer Lee Friedlander's show "America by Car" opens today at the
Whitney Museum in New York City. The photographs in the show and the
accompanying book show Friedlander's vision of the US through the
windows and mirrors of his various rental cars over the last 15 years.
Although there is no explicit connection to anything Nabokovian (as far
as I know), the scenes he captures in this show, and in his older car
images dating back to the 1960s, make me think of the Nabokovs driving
around the US, as well as Humbert's and Dolly's trips. The humor and
shadowy presence of the photographer in these works also seem to
express
a sort of kinship with VN . . .

These are beautiful, thought- and laughter-provoking photographs,
very much in VN's spirit. Enjoy!
