A friend and colleague of mine, Dr Michael Sebek, Director of the
Institute of Psychoanalysis in Prague, has vividly described to me what it was
like practising psychoanalysis illegally during the Stalinist times in
Czechoslovakia (i.e. before 1989), when neither analyst nor analysand could be
sure the other was not a secret policeman or policewoman.
