Dmitri Nabokov:[ Who will come to rescue our Laura?]
Thanks, Jansy -- will you? Or at least keep making suggestions? Happy New
Year!
JM: The edition in English
is perfectly elegant! Laura's outfit for travelling abroad, though, must be
adequate to bring out her intrinsic qualities. Such as her velvety black
slippers - so unlike Wild's "tartan booties with a clasp" (the poor
guy).
Nabokov's colors violet and orange are
recurrent (for example, in "Ada," we get Violet K. and R.
Oranger) & also in TOoL: "a violet handkerchief which turned
orange - a little parlor trick -when he stuffed it back."(64) or "Black fans and violet ones, fans like orange sunbursts, painted
fans with clubtailed Chinese butterflies"(109)*.
When Darkbloom
explains the "vibgyors" (prismatic pulsations) we find
that the rainbow-color sequence,
that starts with "violet", always seems to stop
short before the "red" appears, in sunsets, writing inks and even
in a conjuror's act. Is there any particular reason why?
Happy New
Year!

*: in translation the explosive
"sunburst" has disappeared, together with the Chinese butterfly's
"clubtails."
