In the opening shot of Andrzej Wajda’s Katyn, the year is 1939, and a group of Polish civilians fleeing German forces come across countrymen running in the opposite direction — this group is fleeing from the Soviets. It’s a situation that can only be called absurd; Vladimir Nabokov describes a similar situation in his own life as a “dull, beastly farce,” and the phrase is wholly applicable here. The scene could almost be funny, if it weren’t tragic.
