Th
Thanks, Matt. I wonder whether VN came up with Newport
because of the jazz festival (started 1954), not in
reference to the performers but to beatniks in the
audience. This movie poster suggests that by 1960,
the "beard worn collar-style" (if I'm translating
/barbe portee en collier/ correctly) was associated
with the beatnik stereotype.

There seem to have been beatniks in Newport Beach,
Calif., too.
The possible connection to Anson Bourne doesn't explain
VN's use in /The Gift/--unless maybe we imagine he said,
"I called it a Newport Frill in /Pale Fire/, so that's
what I'll call it from now on."
