Dear Professor Blackwell,
The reference in The Gift is on p. 259 of the Vintage paperback.
The Flaubert citation is his letter to Louise Collet of June 1, 1853:
``Il y a
de ces choses qui me font juger les hommes à première vue : 1°
l'admiration de Béranger ; 2° la haine des parfums ; 3° l'amour des
grosses étoffes ; 4° la barbe portée en collier ; 5° l'antipathie du
bordel.'' This letter is online at
http://flaubert.univ-rouen.fr/correspondance/conard/lettres/53g.html.
I don't have the Pléiade edition of Flaubert to hand to give a better
citation.
Regards,
Steve Arons

Dear
Mr. Arons,
Would you kindly send along page references for The Gift and for
Flaubert as a follow-up to your post?
I'm sure many will want to examine the context (and the original
Russian).
Many thanks,
Stephen Blackwell
