I
wasn't exactly saying Nabokov was in disagreement with his narrator,
although I guess I implied as much. Mainly I just thought it was
interesting that Wilson should have assumed the narrator and N. were
transparently, not things, but one and the same--surely from what
little we know of the history of N.'s shall we say sentimental life, he
was certainly never as priggish as V, thank god. I myself am in
disagreement with them both about the word. I think it has a wonderful
elasticity. Makes me think of an accordion's bellows stretching and
constricting, emitting resonant and colorful bleats and moans--a good
word indeed.
