Dave Haan sent along Amelia Glaser's "easrnest proposal" for Dmitri Nabokov under the-subject heading "TOOL". In it, she wrote about "The Original of Laura" [ The damage, I fear, has been done. Dmitri Nabokov, after years of teasing his father's readers, has announced the imminent publication of Vladimir Nabokov's unfinished last manuscript, The Original of Laura, which has been sitting, we are told, in a Swiss safety deposit box, hostage to filial indecision.]
There are already two Brazilian candidates to translate VN's posthumous cards, as earnest as ernest. And yet, inspite of the delicious irony of eating the original and translating it, too -there remains (for me and once again) a nagging technical question: is TOOL correct? I've often read "The Original Laura", and TOOL makes more sense.
