I revoke my Martinsburg, WV analogy: Google played a
Nabokovian joke on me, substituting Palermo, California (39°26′18N)
for Palermo, Italy (38°07'00’’N).
I agree that Matt Roth is correct in concluding Harrisonburg,
VA as a more likely analogy to New Wye.
(Probably I just became a West Virginia patriot in my 13
years here)

Jansy writes "it is Boston, not Virginia, which lies in the vicinity of
Wordsmith."
This is not true.
We know (from Kinbote but he has no reason to lie here) that New Wye is
"at latitude of Palermo", i.e. about 39°N.
Palermo is at 39°26′18″N.
Within Appalachia (i.e. Appalachian Mts.), the closest model is Martinsburg in
West Virginia, at 39°27'N,
which is much closer to Virginia than to Boston.
