I'm not sure what to make of VN;s reference to the "intense inner life" of John Shade - - it might certainly mean he has a second personality (that'll keep your inner life busy).

p.s. I have recently heard that DNA studies of populations show that about 80% of the world's current population are descended from Genghis Khan (tant pis pour vn).

That's very interesting about Mandel'shtam - - if I ever knew that, I had forgotten it - - he was such a Greek supremacist (really not very good for a Jew)!

The lake I referred to is the Tarn that I think could be seen from a window at Ardis. The Tarn of course is a river in the south of France, so I thought it had another name. Really don't recall now what the connection to Armenia was. I rarely think about Ada any more.
