EDNote: I think I failed to post this the other day; if it is a
duplicate--sorry! As for the query itself, I'm not aware of any studies
on the transition from the LC PF Fair Copy to the published version,
but others may know more. I believe the Fair Copy is quite close to the
final version. On the other hand, there is some other draft material,
or better to say--preparatory notes, on PF in both the Berg and the LC
collections. As for citing: if the material has never been published
it would certainly require receiving permission through the estate's
agent; description, on the other hand, is unrestricted to my knowledge.
If there is such a thing as an "ambiguous case," it would require the
help of a copyright specialist, or else asking permission would be
prudent. The NYPL-Berg collection materials are ~90% open access; most
of the LC materials are still restricted access, as far as I know
(access requests go through the estate's US agent in most cases). ~SB

Dear List,
I am curious about the process of revision that occurred between the
holograph manuscript of Pale Fire in the Library of Congress and the
version that appeared in print. Is there a record of these revisions,
and
has anyone published anything about this? Also, I'm a bit hazy on the
scholarly restrictions regarding citing or mentioning unpublished
variants, notes and marginal notations from VN's manuscripts. I can be
contacted off-list at mroth@messiah.edu.
Thanks,
Matt Roth
