Steven observed on my note on Cortez: "Stout-hearted, mayhap?  Also consider that if you sail across the Atlantic, crawl through the Panamanian hills to a crest spanning the isthmus, you would be facing west and it would be the Pacific that your eagle eye would fall on.
You may be right and that's another point to consider  since, in this case, my hypothesis is invalidated.
We must then go back to Mike Donohue's original question:
Why couldn't he find any records that matched the results of a (possible) newspaper-clipping like the ones mentioned by Shade? Were they changed by Shade and why? Were they simply a product of his imagination?
