I once learned that "bloody" is an
effect of "blooped ink" ( to quote Tom Rymour´s wonderful
anedocte) that compressed what originally was "by our Lady", perhaps an
early form of politically-correct swearing ( such as "Gosh", or
Snoopy's "Good Grief"...).
I have no idea if this information is
correct and what relation ( if there is any) with the drink "Bloody
Mary".
Knickers, that's the word I had been
looking for to describe that kind of garment. Thanks!
