EDNote: Tarnowsky's work was held in VDN's library, in more than one
language. The 1904 catalog shows La descendance des
heredosyphilitiques (Paris, no year) and The sexual instinct
and its morbid manifestations (Paris 1898). The 1911 supplement
includes Bor'ba s sifilisom--rech' (S-Pb, 1897).

I am working on a piece, "Pedophilia and Communism: Surveillance in
_Lolita_" and I'm curious to know if any folks are familiar with Tarnowsky's
Pederasty in Europe (cite below)and whether Nabokov might have known his
name. I admit to ONLY looking at the listserv archives to see if ither the
author or the text has been discussed (they have not), so I apologize if
someone has mentioned this in an article elsewhere. My next step is to
return to the Lolita scholarship, but right now I'm immersed in all sorts of
texts regarding pederasty (I had a nice stack awaiting me at my library
today...does the Patriot Act cover this?)
Many thanks in advance for your help offlist.
