Actually, “pet,” spelled
precisely thus, does mean “fart” in French, and can be found in
almost any French dictionary. For example, Dictionnaire de
L'Académie française, 8th Edition (1932-5), has:
Perhaps DN means that “pet” means, literally, ‘nothing’
in French, which of course it does in certain expressions, such as, “Ca ne vaut pas un pet.” Just clearing the air, so to
speak.
