There's a very good chapter on Kubrick's Lolita in Thomas Allen Nelson's Kubrick: Inside A Film Artist’s Maze, (Indiana University Press, 1982) which focuses on these kinds of visual devices.

EDNOTE. Jansy and I have been talking off-list about the Kubrick _Lolita._  Below she very kindly reproduced the scene in which LO fingers a gimcrack objet d'arte with a hand holding a quill--obviously alluding to her lover Quilty. I have always appreciated the gimmick as one of the film's rare attempts to visually duplicate one of VN's verbal devices. Perhaps film buff will find others.
