teoretiko-literaturnyx ponyatii V.V. Nabokova (Nabokov's System of Aesthetic
& Literary Theory Concepts) ( Krasnodar: kUBANSKII GOSUDARSTVENNYI
UNIVERSITET 2001),
This small book is a catalogue-dictionary of
Nabokov's use of aesthetic and literary terms compiled mostly from his
non-fictional writings (both English & Russian) --an attempt to define his
critical "semantic universe." It consists of three sections:
I. Aesthetic & Literary concepts, e.g., circa
70 terms such as avtor,, igra, kompozitsiya, mimikrii, sinxronizatsiya, uzor,
xod konem, epitet....
II. Aesthetic and cultural concepts, e.g., 14 items
such as veshch', drugoi, prizma, slovo, tekst
III. Concepts & terms commonly used in
discussing VN's work----gipertekst, dvoinoe vremya, metaproza potustoronnost',
etc.
The volume is predicated in terms of the
presumed system of critical terms inherited and developed by VN in discussing
his own work and that of others---his own ideolect as it evolved
from traditional systems into those used about his work by subsequent
critics. This is a rather grandiose view but whatever take one has
of the megaclaim--the volume can be of considerable use to Nabokov scholars as a
convenient way of locating VN's comments and definitions of critical terms. The
catch, of course, is that the terms are mostly translated from English into
Russian and the sources are cited by their Russian translations, e.g.,
LZL="Lectures on Foreign Literature", etc. You must be able to read Russian and
then work back to the English sources.
There is a useful critical bibliography of 127
items and a "glossary/index of each of the three categories that refer to the
full definitions and examples in the three sections of the text.
