Subject: Fw: typo (?) in chess problem in 'Drugie
berega'
I just compared another edition. It was a typo: instead
of black pawn on e3 it should have been c3. Then 1. Bc2 is the only
solution and beautiful indeed. Better be careful with
those letters on the chess board, especially when publishing
Nabokov!

Subject: typo (?) in chess problem in 'Drugie berega'
I just realized that chess problem in 'Drugie berega' from
Charkov Folio edition of 1997 has a solution different from the one offered
by Nabokov. My copy says:
White: Kga7, Qb6, Rf4, Rh5, Be4, Bh8, Kd8,
Ke6, b7, g3
Black: Kge5, Rg7, Bh6, Ke2, Kg5, e3, c6,
d7
But that chess problem has simple solution with first move: 1.
Rf5+
VN's solution in chapter 14 is: 1. Bc2.
Also the same goal as in 1. Bc2 is achieved by 1. Bd3
and 1. Bb1.
I suspect the typo in my edition. Can somebody please compare
the position with Speak Memory ?
Thanks,
George
