Readers of my essay on the poem "Pale Fire" in the Ginkgo edition of the poem and in my Stalking Nabokov will notice that I redeploy but expand on the discussion of Sonnet 30 there. Nabokov, I think, might have have been tickled to see how Nabokovian I make Shakespeare sound, although I do not put it in those terms (and see it only now, writing to you Nabokv-Listers): averse to raw autobiography, and predisposed to complicating pattern on pattern and to hiding things for good readers to find.
