I offer the following brief report for the benefit of Nabokovians all over the world.
About a week ago, Gennady Barabtarlo and I were in Lawrence, Kansas to attend the small memorial gathering for Steve Parker, the founder of the Vladimir Nabokov Society and long-time editor of The Nabokovian. There were about 80 people in attendance, mostly family, friends, and former colleagues of Steve's. It was a moving event, and it was particularly joyful to hear the lovely stories about Steve's rich life told by the people who filled it, and whose lives he filled in so many ways. It felt good to see this gathering remember and honor the man who had given so much to his family, his students, and his fellow Nabokovians. He truly lived a beautiful life, and leaves a wonderful legacy.
