According to Ryovshin (a character in VN's play The Event, 1938), when the target is divided in two parts and these parts are in different places, one does not know where to shoot:

Lyubov' calls Ryovshin "a Sherlock Holmes from Barnaul:"

Ревшин. Ну что ты опять на меня ополчаешься... Ты же... вы же... знаете, что я...
Любовь. Я знаю, что вы обожаете развлекаться чужими делами. Шерлок Холмс из Барнаула. (ibid.)
In VN's play The Waltz Invention (1938) an unknown dare-devil (as the Colonel calls him) fired an air-gun to assassinate Waltz :
Министр. Меня только что известили... с непонятным опозданием... о дерзком покушении на вашу особу... И вот -- я хочу вам поклясться...
Вальс. Оно -- мое частное дело, и я уже принял меры.
Министр. Позвольте, позвольте... Какие меры?.. Клянусь...
Полковник. Успокойтесь, мой дорогой, мой незабвенный начальник. Нам пока ничто не угрожает. Вчера на улице безвестный смельчак, -- которого, к
сожалению, ещё не поймали, но поймают, -- выстрелил из духового ружья, вот... в него, ну и пуля оцарапала ему голову.
Вальс. Заметьте: духовое ружье. Тонкое внимание, остроумная шпилька. (Act Three)
In The Adventure of the Empty House (1903), by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Colonel Moran fires a specialized air-gun to assassinate Sherlock Holmes. Colonel Moran is a card-sharp. As he speaks to Waltz, Son (in the English version, Trance) mentions a card deftly slipped by the conjurer:
ВАЛЬС: Зачем мне угадывать?
СОН: Да, я неправильно выразился. Конечно, наперёд вы не можете знать, какое вам место укажут, но вы можете, — вот как фокусник подсовывает скользком карту… Словом, если у вас есть тут помощники, то не так трудно внушить нашим экспертам, какой пункт назначить для взрыва, — а там уже всё подготовлено… Так, что ли? (Act Two)
In Transparent Things (1972) there is also an allusion to The Adventure of the Empty House:
That monumental man [Mr. R.] with his clayey makeup and false grin, and Mr. Tamworth of the brigand's beard, seemed to be acting out a stiffly written scene for the benefit of an invisible audience from which Person, a dummy, kept turning away as if moved with his chair by Sherlock's concealed landlady, no matter how he sat or where he looked in the course of the brief but boozy interview. It was indeed all sham and waxworks as compared to the reality of Armande, whose image was stamped on the eye of his mind and shone through the show at various levels, sometimes upside down, sometimes on the teasing marge of his field of vision, but always there, always, true and thrilling. (chapter 10)
In Conan Doyle's story a wax bust of Holmes is moved regularly from below by Mrs. Hudson (Sherlock's landlady) to simulate life. Colonel Moran's bullet hits that bust.
