If “We would prefer not to have known at all our neighbor, the retired hot-dog stand operator, if it turns out he has just produced the greatest book of poetry his age has seen,” we would prefer to have known Stan even better while we had the chance, now we know what rich lives he was leading in so many spheres beyond the Nabokovian one he brightened up so much.

It is with a sense of disbelief that I note the passing last month of Stan Kelly-Bootle, Nabokv-L friend and long-time contributor. Stan's wide-ranging, heterodox, and polymathic approaches to Nabokov were filled with wit and energy. It is hard to imagine such a lively spirit transitioning out of this world.

Dear List,
It is with great sorrow that I report the death of Stan Kelly-Bootle, a
longtime N-L contributor. Stan was a fount of knowledge about languages,
mathematics, computer science, sport, music, entertainment, and British
culture, among many other things, and his spirited contributions to the
List were always amusing and informative.
John Chettoe sent the following news of Stan's death:
Not sure this has been picked up on the list, but that indefatigable
polymath and contributor to the list Stan Kelly-Bootle has just passed away
at the age of 84.
He led a most remarkable life, as witnessed by the obituaries I have read
in the UK. One of those people who lived many different lives at the same
time. I attach a link to the obituary in The Guardian:
