Nabokovians:

In "Parade", the insert to our local Sunday newspaper on December 24, 1995,
there is a question from a reader about the new Lolita film. Stephen Schiff,
the screenwriter for the film, is quoted as saying

"We don't think of this as a remake at all. For instance, the
previous movie was made at a time when the major characters couldn't even
kiss on screen. We've gone back to the literary classic by Vladimir Nabokov.
But let me assure you, our movie in no way glamorizes pedophilia. No one
will come away wanting to be like Humbert."

Schiff also reports that the ne Lolita film will be "franker and more
erotic" than the original. (Zembla, the Nabokov WWW site, will be running an
exclusive interview with Stephen Schiff sometime in the next month or two.)

A note on Zembla: the typographical weirdnesses (commas instead of
apostrophes, bizarre diacritics, etc.) reported by some of you are due in
great part to the version of Netscape being used to browse the site. Zembla
was constructed using Netscape 1.2 and 1.22. Older versions, such as 1.1,
will misread certain codes and can produce strange characters. In no case I
have seen do the minor glitches interfere with reading the text. As later
versions of Netscape and other browsers become generally available, these
problems should be mitigated. Having said this, I still welcome all comments
and corrections about the material contained in the site. Thank you.
