EDITORIAL NOTE. The following response to Brian Boyd's annotation queries
re the forthcoming Library of America VN edition was apparently among
those postings deleted during the recent problems. I run it again and ask
that anyone who sent in postings between 1 AND 11 December and did NOT
see them on the list should resend them now. Thank you.

An allusion to the last stanza of Fyodor Tiutchev's famous poem
"Vesenniaia groza" ("A Spring Thunderstorm"). Dimitri Obolensky's literal
translation in *The Penguin Book of Russian Verse* goes as follows:
"You will say inconstant Hebe, while feeding Zeus's eagle,
laughing, emptied a cup seething with thunder from heaven on to the earth."
A spectacular Russian ending of the "damp carnival."

Doesn't it look like a parody (that last resort of wit) of Pope's
discussion of Nature in the very beginning of "An Essay on Criticism?" Cf.:
