EDITORIAL NOTE: In reporting the first English appearance (the August
_Playboy_) of VN's 1924 story, I mentioned that it had previously appeared
in French and Italian. Below Dieter Zimmer, editor of the Rowohlt German
edition _Vladimri Nabokov. Gesammelte Werke_ calls attention to the German
publication which was, in fact, the first. Volumes 13 & 14 of the set
contain the most complete collection of VN's stories. Most important for
the scholar is the _Bibliographische Nachweise_ in vol. 14 contains a
concise list of and publication information on all of the stories. DBJ

In your forum message about the PLAYBOY-"Veneziana" you mention that this
story is also available in French and Italian translations. I would like
to point out that there is a German translation, too. As a matter of fact,
the Rowohlt edition was the first one. Its two volumes of stories,
published in 1989, contain _all_ of VN's stories, in chronological order,
including the early, uncollected ones. They were prepared with the kind
and insistent help of Vera Nabokov who wanted them to be a model for
future editions in other languages. The French edition ("La Venitienne")
came out in 1990 and in part was based on the material I had gathered for
the German edition.
