EDITOR'S NOTE: The note below from Dieter Zimmer, VN's leading German
translator and editor of the magnificent Rowohlt Gesammelte Werke edition
of VN, reponds to Brian Walter's query about John De Moss' old
mimeographed index to STRONG OPINIONS. I take the opportunity to once
again stress the scholarly value of the extensive editorial apparatus to be
found in the Rowohlt edition. The Zimmer index to STRONG OPINIONS is a good
example. Every major research library utilized by Nabokov specialists
should own this edition for its annotations. DBJ

I am sorry I don't have John De Moss' address, and still more sorry that I
didn't even know his index to *Strong Opinions* existed. But I may point out
that the German edition of *Strong Opinions* (*Deutliche Worte*, Reinbek:
Rowohlt, 1994) does have an index which I compiled on the model of VN's index to
*Speak, Memory*. If I thought it "invaluable" I would not say so, but it
certainly serves a purpose.
