EDITORIAL NOTE: Dieter Zimmer, the editor of Rowohlt's superb edition of
VN's collected works, poses the following question. Your responses are
invited.
I would also mention that his annotations to Rowohlt's edition of
LOLITA should be familiar to every student of that novel.

A question to the experts of the Nabokov Forum. In one of the earliest reviews
to be published, John Hollander wrote that *Lolita* is "the record of Mr.
Nabokov's love affair with the romantic novel" (*Partisan Review*, Fall 1956,
p.560), and several critics have since then elaborated on that point.
Question: What exactly did he mean by "romantic novel"? (Brief definition,
Webster style, plus one prototype.)
