Thanks to Jeff Edmunds for clarification of the chess reference
in "A Matter of Chance". My reason for raising the question of
VN's possible 'improvement' to his own texts is that from what
we know already (via Field, Boyd, and especially Jane Grayson -
*Nabokov Translated*) VN was certainly not averse to 'enriching'
his work when the opportunity presented itself. In fact I suppose
that there is much interesting work to be done in comparing the
original publication (or manuscripts) of the stories with the
later revisions.
