Subject: Color opponency

Nabokovians:
Late last year I pointed out Hugh Person's remembering cherry-red
shutters as being apple-green in Transparent Things. For those of you who
keep track of such "melochi", I have found another. In King, Queen, Knave
Franz gives to Martha a pair of red slippers (a la Madame Bovary). At the
end of the book, as Martha lies delirious in bed, she pleads with Dreyer to
bring her "emerald slippers". Her memory, like Person's, has performed a
color opponency flip.
