NABOKV-L wishes all of its 75 subscribers a splendid 1994. I would like to
start off the New Year with a token gift to all--the titles of the two
best English-language novels that I have run across in the last couple of
years. Neither novel is especially Nabokovian, but both display a
linguistic virtuosity that is reminiscent of the master's. Alexander
Theroux's DARCONVILLE'S CAT (1981) (but decidedly not his more recent
THE ADULTERY), and Richard Powers' OPERATION WANDERING SOUL (1992?) Both,
in my view, meet VN's "aesthetic bliss" criterion.
If you have particular favorites, please pass them on.
New Years Greetings!
