EDITOR's NOTE. In view of The Post Office's recent denial of a Nabokov
stamp, perhaps Governor Weld should be encouraged to seek higher office.

A lengthy article in today's (3/18/97) edition of the Boston Globe ("When
wits collide--State House trio parades IQs," p. 1) describes the
intellectual interplay between Massachusetts Governor William Weld, state
Senate President Tom Birmingham, and state House Speaker Tom Finneran.
The article notes that Weld is currently reading "Transparent Things."
It also recounts the following:
"Finneran, who claims he is the simple 'plowman' in the presence of two
intellectuals, freely admits that when Weld starts talking in the Monday
meetings about a book or movie, he scribbles down the title. During an
interview, he races to his desk and retrieves a newspaper clipping of an
interview in which Weld praised Nabokov's 'Pale Fire.'
"'I've put this aside, and someday I'm going to read that book and see
what he found so interesting,' said Finneran. He gave an elaborate sigh
of futility. 'And then he'll probably tell me he read it in the original
Russian or some damn thing.'"
