The annotation suggests that they really are "amateur X-rays." But how
would that work? I always thought it was tracings of shadows, or possibly
capturing silhouettes with light-sensitive paper. I wonder if any book or
magazine from the era might have a description of this practice, as Appel
says it was not an invention.
