1. Some days ago NABOKV-L ran a note on a Fassbinder retrospective in NYC
which is to include his Stoppard-scripted version of VN's DESPAIR. The
L.A. Times this morning reports that a similar event, sponsored by the
UCLA Film Archive & the Goethe Institute, will take place in L.A. between
Feb. 7 and 16 March. The scheduled showing of DESPAIR is not mentioned but
information may be obtained from (310) 206-FILM.

2. Sergey Il'yin, Moscow translator of VN's English novels, has kindly
sent me a copy of the glossy, up-scale Russian magazine DOMOVOI (House
Spirit) which seems to fall somewhere between _House and Garden_ and
_Vanity Fair_. The September 1995 issue (pp. 136-144) contains an article
by Alla Romanova & Sergei Iur'ev entitled "Vospitanie Nabokova" (VN's
Upbringing) in the "Family Archive " section. Mostly notable for its
excellent illustrations and photographs (some new to me), the article
ponders the question of "a spoiled upbringing" and a more traditionally
structured one. The essay includes a few interesting tidbits provided by
Russian VN specialists Vadim Stark (head of the Nabokov Foundation in St.
Petersburg), Olga Skonechanya, Natalia Tolstaya, and others. Also
noteworthy are the photos from Dmitri Nabokov's April 1995 visit to Nabokov estate
and city home.
