Steven Milhauser's EDWIN MULLHOUSE, recently mentioned here in connection
with VN, is a good alternative. A splendid short example (wonderful for
teaching) is Borges' story which appears in English as "The Form of the
Sword" and "The Shape of the Sword." Agatha Christie's THE MURDER OF
ROGER ACKROYD is a classic example of another kind.
