I'm confused by Lolita apologists who cling to that "marriageable and
mateable" defense. Humbert himself eventually understands that it misses
the point and he is the one who originated it in the first place.
Caryn James wrote a review of Lyne's film in Sunday's New York Times
Arts & Leisure section. Very thoughtful and interesting, apart from an
odd comment about "Lolita" not having the "artistic cachet" of the "The
English Patient."
