While I would like to think that VN had appreciated Wallace Stevens,
there's no evidence suggesting this is the case; and when I
enthusiastically mentioned Stevens to Vera Nabokov, in the early
1980s, she dismissed him with a comment like "Isn't he rather
drearily ponderous?" (or was it "abstract"?--something like that)--
which I took, the way she said it, as being less her own opinion than
one she had heard from VN.
