Actually, Wahrigs Deutsches Wörterbuch has
Zerevis = "small cap without visor, worn by members of a students'
association" ("kleine schirmlose Mütze der Verbindungsstudenten"),
i.e. of the kind of students described in D.B.Johnson's answer.
The word is indeed linked etymologically with the "beer"-term.
