Many thanks to all who have responded to my Yosemite posting, both on- and
off-list. I just wanted to reiterate that I didn't intend to imply any deep
meaning, any "symbolism." I agree fully with Galya Diment ("it would
surprise me if Nabokov intended to make much of it"), and with the thrust of
Sylvia Wendel's remarks, though I would need some convincing that the core
subject matter of the novel is how to speak the language (not a machete,
Sylvia, just a mild demur). I hadn't thought that, as Sylvia points out, any
number of other mispronunciations could just as well have elicited Betty's
_What_?
