My favorite story, based
on my having thought
about it once a month
or so since I first read
it in 1991 (in a Penguin
paperback smuggled from
England to the US), is
the Russian story (I've
only read it in English)
"A Dashing Fellow."
It contains one of VN's
best inversions, and is
very sad, with its crude
depths of inverted
tenderness.
