Alphonse Vinh responds:
Originally, this was based upon Gore Vidal's naming of Nabokov as "the black
swan of Swiss-American Letters" in a highly entertaining essay entitled,
"Professor Nabokov." I'm sure that's where Bill Buckley derived his nickname
for Nabokov. Incidentally, Buckley became friends with the Nabokovs, gave VN
a complimentary subscription to the NATIONAL REVIEW, and accompanied Dimitri
N. on his antique harpsichord.
