Entirely a footnote to this thread: for an almost impossibly perfect example
of a "painterly novel" -- in that (1) it consists entirely of a series of
images (including human images) -- no plot whatever and (2) it was written by
a great painter, interested parties might look into "Hebdomeros" by Giorgio De
Chirico (not, as is not generally well-known, an "official" Surrealist, but
rather their precursor and mortal enemy -- no Marx or Freud for him!).
