I believe Irina Paperno has dealt to some extent with this question in an
essay entitled Kak sdelan "Dar" Nabokova."
It was published in Russian in NLO and in Pro et Contra, but first
appeared, apparently in
Literature, Culture, and Society in the Modern Age. In Honor of Joseph
Frank. Stanford Slavic Studies 4:2, 1992.
