My thanks to Mr. Zimmer for making some of the most lucid comments on the
Barbara Braun issue I have read so far on Nabokov-L. My mother's maiden name
was Grau, and she told me of some of the prejudice her family, Nebraska
farmers, faced during WWI. And now, perhaps ignoring Mr. Zimmer's advice, I
think I remember reading somewhere in VN's works that he had a distant German
relative named Graun(?), a fairly well-known composer during his lifetime. If
I haven't gotten the name wrong, could there possibly be an indirect
compliment paid to this relative by naming the other book's author Braun and
saying some very nice things about "When Lilacs Last?"
