Query: "Sonic vista"?

Somewhere in Nabokov, unless I've invented this, a character
picks up the phone, dials a number, waits, hears the receiver at the
other end lifted, but hears no human voice. Nabokov writes that "a
sonic vista opened up." I would be endlessly beholden to any Nabokovian
who can tell me where this takes place in Nabokov's work.?
